Pink flowers are extremely popular with Clematis, so you may think you’ve seen every possible interpretation of the color. But there’s no pink quite like this bicolor. From the distinct white edge to the contrasting carmine center, everything emphasizes the beauty of these pink margins. Mystic Gem is the perfect winning combo of compact plant and large flower, the flowers really steal the show here. Because it’s tidily compact, you can grow it in a container and up a trellis or obelisk, where its outward facing, round flowers will be on full display. We like that container near a sitting area or patio, somewhere it can set a pretty scene and benefit from a little wind protection—since it’s pruning group yellow, you’ll want to keep some old vine to get the best double blooms in spring (although the single blooms it produces, especially on newer vines, are beautiful too).
Mystic Gem is part of the Vancouver series, which you’ll love if you’re a serious collector, or if you were in on the Vancouver collection we’ve offered and, rightly, want to add to it now. Vancouver Clematis varieties are all traditionally free flowering with that compact habit for container gardening that’s in vogue right now—the perfect blend of classic performance and modern style.
