This a good shrub for landscaping, even before you take the incredible blooms into consideration. It’s a strong perennial that grows into a dense, upright mound of lush leaves that stand up into autumn. You can depend on it for decades as a verdant backdrop for your flower garden. And in spring to early summer, petal-packed double blooms transform your garden. This peony was named because the blooms reminded the breeder of home in Toulouse, France. Bring in a bouquet of Belle Toulousaine peonies, and feel yourself transported to storybook streets ambling along the Garonne River, surrounded by the stunning pink-stone architecture of La Ville Rose. Peonies have few requirements: give them a sunny well-drained location, plant 2-4′ apart, with the eyes (new buds at the crown) no more than 2″ below soil level and apply fertilizer or compost in spring. They take a while to establish, often 3 years before the first bloom—but the wait is worth it. They are heirloom quality. Let them grow undisturbed and they will bring joy to you and your loved ones through the decades.
