These blooms are magnificent. The bright, hot color and fully double form, the fragrance, the abundance… you won’t be able to resist bringing some into your home in the most beautiful fresh bouquets. They’re also excellent butterfly attractors. But the blooms aren’t the only exciting thing about Felix Crousse Peony. It’ll keep interest in the shrub border or as a backdrop to your perennials even when the flowers aren’t blooming. The leaves are beautiful. New growth in spring is copper-burgundy, then through summer they’ll be glossy, dark green and abundant. In fall, they’ll turn to a nice, soft yellow hue. And since, once properly established, they thrive for decades on neglect, you won’t have to worry about what to put in that spot again for a very, very long time. Growing up to 32″ tall, this peony is also small enough for container planting. Paeonia ‘Felix Crousse’
Peonies have few requirements: give them a sunny well-drained location, plant 2-4′ apart, with the eyes (new buds at the crown) no more than 2″ below soil level and apply fertilizer or compost in spring. They take a while to establish, often 3 years before the first bloom—but the wait is worth it. They are heirloom quality. Let them grow undisturbed and they will bring joy to you and your loved ones through the decades.
